The Untold Story of Milk is a well written, thoroughly researched and  timely study on the history and politics of a dietary staple. Ron Schmid  provides the essential historical and ecological context that is  necessary to understand the nature of the controversy surrounding the raw milk versus pasteurized debate.

From my professional experience in hosting a university seminar series  on the raw milk issue, I have noted that much of the controversy  surrounding this subject seems to be a result of information gaps and  misplaced assumptions. During that seminar series I often recommended  the first edition of this book to colleagues needing an introduction and  overview of the subject. Once the second edition was published, I  carefully reread this book with many of the critical questions in mind  that were raised during the discussions that surrounded the raw milk  seminars. I also checked many literature citations as I read this second edition.

Pasteurization of milk is often described as one of the major public  health victories of the last century. With many people unaware of the  historic and economic circumstances that lead to the mandate for  pasteurization in the first place the author appropriately covers this  subject at length. Ron Schmid, ND, naturopathic physician, writer, teacher, and farmer, has prescribed raw milk for his patients for nearly 25 years. The author of Traditional Foods Are Your Best Medicine, Dr. Schmid is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine and has taught at all four of America’s naturopathic medical schools. He’s the former Clinic Director and Chief Medical Officer at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine.
